From Student Leader to Adult

IMG_7508

When I was in college I was super involved! Student orgs, Greek life, pageants, gospel choir, you name it, I was in it! I loved my life in Arizona (Go Sun Devils)! I felt so independent and sure of myself and by the time I hit my senior year, I felt like I finally had a grasp on who I was and the type of leader I wanted to be.

Well fast forward to the summer after graduation, and let me tell you, my confidence and security in the “Boss Lady” I knew I wanted to be slowly started to fade away. I started to miss the life I created for myself at school and I especially missed that feeling of being needed by others. There were no more sorority meetings to run, no more class projects to work on, and my late night trips to Sonic with my friends were officially over. I was now an adult and honestly it was BORING. When I got back home from school I spent most of my time watching TV, hanging out with friends and family, and wondering how I was going to make money for the rest of my life! I couldn’t stand the feeling of not knowing what job I was going to have or what exactly the next year would look like for me.

Luckily, grad school was starting in the fall which made me feel a little better but even now being in my second year and another graduation coming up, I’m dreading that “summer after graduation” feeling! (Hint: Going to grad school doesn’t mean you have it all figured out; it goes by quickly!). Being out of school for a year now, I’ve realized that its nearly impossible to dodge that slightly depressing feeling of leaving college.

Whether you go straight to grad school, get a job, or struggle to figure out what you want to do for months, life after graduation has it’s downfalls. But I’m not one to dwell on the negative. Life after college also has it’s perks too! Below I give some reasons to smile about that degree you have! I hope you all remember that everyone’s journey is different but worrying about the unknown will get us no where! Be young and enjoy the moment!

Perks of Being a College Graduate

1. You can test out various career fields and will always have your degree to back up your skills as someone who is driven and goal-orientated.

2. You have a large network of people you can tap into from now on, professionally and socially.

3. In the long run, you will make more money.

4. Your college experience has most likely helped you grow as a person and as a professional.

5. You have started or continued a trend within your family and you should be PROUD of that!
